Every day, 26-year-old Andy Paves puts his endurance to the test as he juggles the roles of a student and a Mixed Martial Artist. As a first-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Washington, he strives to maintain a good balance between hitting the books and hitting the gym lead by Mixed Martial Arts star, Ivan Salaverry.
Mixed Martial Arts is a full-contact fighting sport where fighters use array of different martial art styles to successfully defeat their opponents.
“I won’t be able to fight if I don’t make money,” Paves says. For him, academics remains a priority over Mixed Martial Arts, a sport otherwise known as cage fighting or Ultimate Fighting.
Paves practices his moves in his spare time after he finishes his schoolwork. Although Paves considers Mixed Martial Arts as only a hobby, he is still dedicated to being the best fighter he can be and proudly holds an undefeated record.
“It’s not easy being a fighter. You’ve got to make so many sacrifices. If you want to make weight, if you want to sharpen up all your skills, it takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of physical abuse. It’s all about achieving Balance.”

Your cover photo looks like it could be in a magazine! This story was really inspirational.
This is one of my favorite topics in this magazine. The photography is wonderful and the audio really captures the idea of “identity”. Great work, Sam!
